Behind the Mask of the Selfie:

October 29, 2015      Self-esteem

selfie stickWhen you get down to the heart of the matter what is behind this selfie obsessed culture we are now living in? Are we addicted to attention?  Are we addicted to ourselves? Is the constant need for selfies breeding a culture of self-centeredness?  Do you really need to hear people compliment you to be secure?   When you see a woman posting constant selfies it can be a sign of something occurring inside her soul.  That need for attention can lead a person down a dangerous path.  If you post a picture of yourself you are guaranteed to get compliments, but it is a false sense of worth.  Women who are out seeking attention put themselves in spiritual, physical, and emotional danger. I wish they knew that they already have God’s approval and attention. Keep posting pictures of you doing life with the people you love, but think twice about the pictures of yourself. I dare you to start taking pictures of the people around you rather than yourself.
You are worth so much more than man’s attention.  You are worth God’s attention.   Years ago someone said to me , “God is well pleased with the life you are living.”  They had no idea the impact of their words.  Those words resonated with my soul.  It went beyond the surface.  It satisfied more than a compliment about my appearance had ever done.  Those words changed my perspective on compliments.   I realized at the end of the day the most important words I will ever hear will be, “Well done thy good and faithful servant,” not look at you, you are so pretty.  In that brief moment I felt like I had God’s approval.  I had God’s attention.  I felt like I had just heard a compliment from God himself.  So I realized a compliment about the heart of a person far outweighs a compliment about appearance.

Romans 8:5
Obsession with self in these matters is a dead end; attention to God leads us out into the open, into a spacious, free life. Focusing on the self is the opposite of focusing on God. Anyone completely absorbed in self ignores God, ends up thinking more about self than God. That person ignores who God is and what he is doing. And God isn’t pleased with being ignored.

Let’s not be the generation of self. Let’s be something different.  We were created for so much more.  Let’s be the generation of selflessness.  Let’s be the generation that seeks God.  Let’s be the generation that seeks a compliment from God.  So let’s take the mask off of the selfie and look at what your left with; empty hollow words that at the end of your life mean nothing.   You are more than a pretty face.  You are more than beautiful skin, gorgeous hair, a great smile, or a skinny body.  At the end of your life you will hear well done thy good and faithful servant or depart from me for I never knew you. I want to be known by God. I fear we are becoming so focused on self that we are loosing our soul.
I pray you begin to develop God confidence, not-self confidence. I want to encourage you to focus on creating a beautiful heart inside you. A beautiful heart that seeks the face of God will have eternal benefits. Only God can satisfy your soul. You were made for so much more!!

This is true! I remember being a young lady in my early 20s, in the military and my 1ST SGT said to me, “is all you do is stand around and look cute?” I was so offended. But this changed me. Up until this point it was my looks that I relied on. This comment by my 1ST SGT moved me to want to prove otherwise. From this point on I really took the work I was there to do seriously. I wasn’t there just to take up space and smile pretty. I had a mission to accomplish and I wanted to be good at it. I went on to be promoted and even work fulltime for the Army.
This can sometimes be a challenge because we have to consciously go against the wave of society!! We have to be aware that so many are looking and measuring by the way we look. We have to know that God looks at the heart. We have to guard ourselves from measuring our worth based on comments and likes on FB.
I like the challenge to take pictures of others around us, not ourself!
To be honest, I took a selfie on Easter (because I thought that I looked nice that morning).. and then I posted in on FB as my profile picture.. you know, God convicted me!! This day is about Jesus! His death, and resurrection. While I did praise God on social media on Easter, I also posted a selfie.. It just did not feel right. IT IS NOT ABOUT ME!! We need a daily reminder of this.

I think we are all wired to want attention. We all want people to notice us. I have learned that the more I get the attention of God the less I need other’s attention. I love your heart. Thanks for sharing!!!
